Will you still be playing tennis at 92?

Sunday, I went to the club to give a lesson to one of my regular clients who just so happened to turn 92 yesterday. I have been hitting with him weekly for the past 4.5 years and I must confess it is one of the highlights of my week (and I believe his). While he may not be able to move like he used to (and I do have to remind him sometimes to not chase everything down!), he comes and saviors his time on the court.

I try and not miss his weekly lesson, even if it means I just come to the club for that 45 minutes. I often realize I get as much out of the time we share together as he does.

What is your oldest regular student? Do you get back as much as you give (I sure hope so!)? What are your favorite things to do in that lesson?

What would get you playing more USTA tournaments?

Have you ever played a USTA tournament or have thought about playing but just never got around to it?

I am reaching out to see if you have any input on what would be required to get more of you to participate regularly in USTA adult tournaments. As you may or may not be aware, the draws for many adult tournaments is poor at best. I am part of a USTA New England committee looking at ways we could increase adult participation. Our league participation is very good, but we seem to be seeing a reduction in participants in tournaments.

If you have any specific ideas as to increase (or in some cases start) your participation in USTA tourneys, please let me know. Or if you have had bad experiences which have turned you away from participating, that would be beneficial as well.

Ouch I Rolled My Ankle!

As Tennis teaching professionals, it is extremely important that we are aware of court safety for our clients. This includes making sure loose tennis balls are picked up or moved out of the way for our clients.

Well, note to self, make sure you do the same on your side of the court. On Wednesday evening, I was teaching a private and did not see a ball next to me. As I went to play a shot back to my student, I stepped on the ball with my right foot and ended up doing a 360 in the air. Fortunately for me, i did not incur a serious injury (except for my pride!) and the X-ray was negative. So, lots of ice, advil and my good friend the air-cast will be part of my daily schedule for the next week or so.

Grand Opening of the Zip Zone on January 26th

The Longfellow Club will be hosting an open house on January 26th as part of the grand opening of the newest Longfellow tennis facility, the Zip Zone. The Zip Zone is one of the nation’s first tennis facilities built to support the USTA QuickStart Tennis program, providing a fun and more effective way to allow children aged 10 and under to play tennis. The courts are 36′ long and 18′ in width with a net height of 2’9″. The players use racquets size appropriate for their age ranging from 19″ to 25″.
The schedule of events for the grand opening is :

9:00am – 11:00am – Open Court Time
11:00am – 12:00pm – Free Zip Tennis clinic for children 4 to 8
12:00pm – 1:30pm – Open Court Time
1:30pm – 2:30pm – Free Zip Tennis clinid for children 4 to 8
2:30pm – 3:00pm – Open Court Time
3:00pm – 4:00pm – Free Zip Tennis clinic for children 6 to 9
4:00pm – 5:00pm – Open Court time

The “Zip Zone”, is a new tennis center targeted for children 10 and under. This new facility consists of 4 indoor 36′ courts with plans to add 7 additional 36′ and 7 60′ outdoor courts in the spring.
The “Zip Zone” is one of the first facilities in the nation to be built specifically for supporting the USTA’s Quickstart (formally known as 36/60) program.The Zip Zone is conveniently located next to the Longfellow Club .

Come and experience Zip Tennis and a Movie!

The Zip Zone will be hosting a fun evening of Tennis for children between the ages of 6 and 9 on Friday January 11, 2008. The cost is $35 per attendee.After some great tennis, attendees will be able to relax with a movie and popcorn.

The move will be Ratatouille!
