I'm not sure what i think. I actually saw him play during those years in the Keys - he looked so bad that i could not believe it was the same guy and he tanked everything. Certain things make sense. I knew him from 86 and it's this memory of him that kind of tells me there's no need for him to be Open. He was always wearing his pain with his glam and need for attention - no suprise it was also going from "out to in(side)" as well. In other words, drugs. Is his dad alive? Have not read the book but kinda feels like he wrote a book to SCREAM back at him.
